POSITION SUMMARY
The Merchant Internship is 12 week assignment is designed to give students an overview for the retail industry, and the buyer life cycle including activities such as Merchandise Selection & Development, Assortment Planning, Pricing & Promotional Strategy, Merchandising Assortment Planning and In Store Execution. Interns spend their time shadowing a seasoned buyer of Sears Holdings and cross functional Merchant support team members; attend self paced learning and field trips and complete a final project to present to Merchant Business leaders. Upon successful completion of the internship, students may receive an offer to join the Buyer Apprenticeship Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES  >>

  • Working in tandem with the buyers and associate buyers to organize the presentation for business and line reviews and provide explanation of strategy and entry/exit plans.
  • Generates reports to analyze item performance versus last year and competitors. Provides recommendations to the buyer for forecast estimates.
  • Actively maintains awareness of products, customer preferences, competitors to keep current on ways to better service customer in assigned categories.
  • Documents category level activities around the buying life cycle to demonstrate competence in each area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for ad hoc projects that support merchandising strategic initiatives.
  • Provide analysis and feedback on current business and/or process improvements to various levels of management including: SVP, Merchandising, Chief Executive Officer, VP of Merchant Operations, SVP of HR.

  • Trace the life of a top selling or underperforming item in an assigned business, develop and present an action plan to improve business results.
  • Shop the competition and present your key findings about the customer, the competition, SHC competitive advantage and recommendations to drive the business.
