KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MARCH SALES RESULTS
TROY, Mich., April 10, 1997--Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today reported total consolidated sales rose 11.1% to $2.921 billion for the five week period ended April 2, 1997, compared with $2.630 billion for the same period last year. On a comparable store basis, consolidated sales were up 12.7% and U.S. Kmart sales were up 13.0%. Results exclude sales of the discontinued Builders Square operations.
Sales from consolidated operations for the 9 weeks ended April 2, 1997 were $4.995 billion, up 7.3% from $4.656 billion for the first 9 weeks of 1996. On a comparable store basis, consolidated sales rose 8.9% for the same period and U.S. Kmart sales rose 9.1%.
"Kmart's sales for March increased substantially due to a number of factors, " said Floyd Hall, Chairman, President, and CEO of Kmart. "Because our March fiscal period ended three days earlier than the industry, we benefited from the earlier Easter holiday to a greater degree than other retailers, and we anticipate that April comparable sales growth will be slower as a consequence. Secondly, we saw significant sales gains as we strategically increased advertising and promotion to introduce our Martha Stewart Everyday products and in support of 110 new high frequency conversions. Lastly, sales improvement for the month was broad-based, with particular strength in categories affected by more favorable weather and the earlier holiday. Among these were men's and children's apparel, home fashions, toys, do-it-yourself, home decorating, patio, horticulture, sporting goods, housewares, cosmetics and fragrances, consumables, and photography."
Kmart Corporation serves America with 2,133 Kmart retail outlets, and operates 123 stores internationally. Kmart Corporation common stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and Chicago Stock Exchanges.
